. . . Flashblocks Flash CMS http://flashblocks.com Geweldig Succes tijdens uitverkocht Bluesfestival Maestricht Een hele avond in de hemel in Maastrichtse “D’n Hiemel”…. Zaterdag 3 april 2010 Voor de Stichting Blues & Roots Maastricht is de eerste editie van ‘Blues Maestricht’ achter de rug. Een bluesfestival met internationale allure is zeker een terechte betiteling die de organisatie in haar persbericht aan het festival toekende. Vier bands die internationaal meetellen in de blues staan op het podium van ‘D’n Hiemel’, een unieke locatie gelegen in het monumentale centrum van Maastricht. Een uitverkocht huis, dat betekent meer dan driehonderdvijftig bezoekers bij deze eerste uitgave en dat betekend ook dat de blues wel degelijk leeft in het zuiden van Limburg. De organisatie heeft dan ook geen enkele kosten en moeite gespaard om: Krissy Matthews, het jonge Britse gitaartalent, Dede Priest, Ian Siegal en King Mo te contracteren. Om een programma zo goed mogelijk te laten verlopen, moet je dus ook het tijdschema strak hanteren. En precies half acht, zoals op het affiche staat aangegeven, bijt het Britse gitaartalent Krissy Matthews de spits af. Verleden jaar bracht hij zijn cd “Allen In Reverse” uit die door de muziekcritici en door het publiek goed is ontvangen. Zijn optreden start nogal hard maar na enkele songs wordt het volume toch wat bijgesteld. Met zijn zeventien jaar mag hij inderdaad een bijzonder gitaartalent genoemd worden die zonder zijn hand om te draaien nummers vertolkt als: ‘Sittin On The top Of The World’ van Albert Collins maar ook nog verduiveld goed ‘Freedom’ uit zijn gitaar trekt. Maar ook eigen werk als het titelnummer van zijn cd ‘Allen In Reverse’ klinkt live net zo sterk als op cd. Een geweldige opening van dit nieuwe festival door een puike gitarist waar we nog veel van zullen horen. Uit een ander vaatje tapt Dede Priest, zij mengt blues, soul, R&B en gospel tot een gesmede eenheid in nummers als ‘Wade In The Water’ of het van Leon Russel gecomponeerde ‘Palace of The King’. Met haar fantastische band die bestaat uit: Richard van Bergen op gitaar; Jody van Ooijen op drums, Govert van der Kolm op keyboard en Roelof Klein op de bas, zet zij een weergaloze show neer. En nog steeds vind ik haar groeien, haar sound en stem klinken als een echte diva betaamt. Het publiek bewonderd haar en gaat helemaal mee in haar muziek. Een toegift valt haar dan ook te beurt dat doet ze met een verrassende keuze. ‘Hounddog’, wel bekend van Elvis, zingt ze op haar eigen wijze, meer bluesy en funky dan we het eigenlijk kennen. Maar oh zo mooi…. Ook dit is een goede keuze van de organisatie. Als derde staat Ian Siegal op het podium. Vandaag solo, maar dat maakt eigenlijk niets uit. Solo is hij net zo sterk als met zijn band. Zijn songkeuze is iets anders maar zoals we van hem gewend zijn is een optreden altijd wel bloedstollend scherp te noemen. Het verloopt niet helemaal vlekkeloos tijdens de aanloop. Ian is niet zo tevreden met het geluid. Dit wordt vooral veroorzaakt doordat tijdens de soundcheck een mixpaneel het heeft begeven en de mensen achter het paneel nog moeten wennen aan het vervangende nieuwe mixpaneel. Dat is echter zo opgelost en na èèn nummer trekt het al weer bij. Hij zingt eigen werk dat hij combineert met werk van Guy Clark en zo krijgen we een schitterende uitvoering van ‘Dublin Blues’ en ‘The Cape’ te horen. Kelly Rucker, die zondag de afterparty zal verzorgen, staat plots naast Ian op het podium en speelt samen met hem enkele nummers. Ian laat zich van zijn beste kan zien en dendert als een sneltrein door zijn set heen. Alles wat goed is komt snel en in dit geval gaat het snel. Zijn toegift eindigt met een korte uitvoering van het overbekende ‘One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer’. Een meezingertje voor het publiek wat dan ook gebeurt, mooier kun je een optreden haast niet afsluiten. Afsluiter van “Blues Maestricht” is de uit deze regio afkomstige band ‘King Mo’ met frontman/zanger Phil Bastiaans, Henk Punter op de drums, Sjors Nederlof op gitaar; Colly Fransen op Hammond en Jules van Bussel op de bas. Vandaag presenteert de band tevens haar nieuwe album “Sweet Devil”. Uiteraard krijgen we hiervan enkele mooie nummers te horen. Maar ook nummers van hun vorige album. Ze openen het optreden met het openingsnummer van hun nieuwe album ‘No Use To Denying’ en al snel volgen ook wat oudere werkjes zoals ‘Sugar Rush’ Little Wing’ en een fantastische uitvoering van ‘Everyday I Have The Blues’ met daarin uitstekend gitaarwerk van Sjors Nederlof maar ook van de Duitse gastgitarist Henrik Fleischlader. Ook ‘Big Legged Woman’, een nummer bekend van Freddie King wordt hier fantastisch gecoverd. Trouwens we hebben hier te maken met vijf fantastische muzikanten die ieder op hun instrumenten of hun muzikale eigenschappen toppers zijn. Een dampend optreden zet King Mo hier neer en vooral het gitaarwerk van Sjors raakt het publiek meer dan eens. Maar met dit fantastische optreden is het eigenlijk nog niet voorbij want King Mo gaat over met het uitnodigen van de muzikanten die vandaag hebben meegespeeld. We krijgen een jamsession voorgeschoteld waar je een puntje aan kunt zuigen. In willekeurige volgorde worden Ian Siegal, Henrik Fleischlader, Krissy Matthews, Kelly Rucker het podium opgeroepen en volgt er een daverende afsluiting van dit bluesfestival. Hierbij neemt Ian het initiatief om enkele nummers van Muddy Waters te spelen en horen we o.a.: ‘Hoochie Choochie Man’ en ‘Mojo Workin’ te horen. Iedere muzikant doet een duit in het zakje maar het laatste woord is aan King Mo die een van mijn favoriete songs spelen, ‘The Hunter’. Een nummer waarmee ze vaker afsluiten en een erg sterk nummer is dat alles in zich heeft wat King Mo uitstraalt. Pure klasse…. Wij waren tijdens dit festival voor even in ‘d’n Hiemel’ en hebben genoten van een prima georganiseerd festival dat volgend jaar zeer zeker zijn vervolg zal krijgen maar dat ook verdient. Top feest Oud op Nieuw 2009-2010 Een enorm succes door een goed concept. Een geheel uitverkochte Hiemel vierde feest tot in de vroege uurtjes. Sammy Lakwijk had de Rokersruimte en Balkon omgetoverd tot D'n Apparte Struys. Met de medewerking van de Struys in de vorm van reclameborden, struysdecor werd er een typische struyssfeer gecrieerd. Pieter van veldhoven ( Shake & served ) en Rob ( barsserie Appart ) hadden zich ontfermd over het disco gedeelte. Prima fris en goeduitziende cocktails vlogen over de bar. Rond 00.00 uur samen toosten met een prosecco en tegen de kou een Jaegermeister al kijkend naar het vuurwerk 2010 in! Misschien tot volgend jaar in D'n Hiemel grt James von Berg, D'n Hiemel Nieuw in 2010: Mood indigo feesten, lekker weer eens dansen zoals vanouds. Make! Bar. verschillende activiteiten georganiseerd door internationale studenten. BV make it Jam. ( samen muziek maken op het podium.)
